I mend as a practice.
Would mending be considered a cuff?
Many people do not know how to make garments and often won't take time to mend a rip. It has become easier to buy new garments than to fix the old ones. Mending creates a connection with the fibres. If you have the opportunity to make your own clothes, you realize how much time, energy and commitment it takes to produce a single piece. You are working against the grain of this "fast-fashion", built-for-the-dump trend promoted by stores like H&M and Forever 21.
I wanted to share an artist creating beautiful works with the use of mending and darning. Her name is Celia Pym.

That's fantastic, so do I. Mending and darning is a life practice that I learned from my grandmother. I have never made my own cloths but I rarely throw them away. Socks, sweaters and everything in between have many more lives than people allow. Perhaps you can give me some pointers. I haven't met another darner in years.
ReplyDeleteAs things stand, I would consider mending more of a pocketing than a cuffing. But I love pockets.
