What is an imperceptible cuff?
There are many imperceptible things. But the imperceptibility of things such as ultrasound, electromagnetic radiation, digestive bacteria, and oxygen are not necessarily described by the same conditions that render cuffing imperceptible. The more I think on imperceptible cuffing, the more I concede to the notion that the imperceptibility of a cuff lies in its scale and duration. These cuffings are constantly in a state of becoming imperceptible. Their events lie at the edge or beyond the perception of scale and their duration unfolds without perceptible change.
To one extreme are imperceptible cuffs so vast as to render themselves imperceptible. They are not held in relation to anything else since all or most of the experienced world is simultaneously co-present in their lint(ings). The perception of these cuffs may be prompted by a tangible detail, event or occurrence that opens a sudden awareness of a persons location or relation within its convergence. At their edges are states and forces that bring about physically perceptible but mind-bogglingly complex activities. When I think of these edges, I imagine that their currents can be witnessed in the event of a flocking of birds or the shifting of a school of fish.
At the other edge of scale are infinitesimal cuffs. These are noticed in shifts so slight, or marginalized that they easily escape perception. Imperceptible cuffs on the edge of the infinitesimal are evidenced in the siltation of find dark sand or the convergence of air born particles into a corner dwelling dust bunny.
I like that you're thinking about the scalability of a cuff, Donna, and I agree that for me, in oder for the cuff to work as a conceptual machine, it needs to be able to perform as a scalable concept - where a small gesture can sidle and sift alongside another gesture, aggregate and begin to grow. Cuffs along cuffs, creating cuffs that cuff other cuffs...
ReplyDeleteThanks for responding Matthew, this is the beginning of the cuff working as a concept for me. I'm exploring this further in this weeks post. Though I've been thinking consciously of cuffs flowing from one to another, I would like to give more thought to your suggestion of cuffs giving rise to other cuffs and the potential for the building of momentum.
