As in the last sessions' workshop, I was thinking about the visual possibilities of making a cuff in order to find a way to define it, I came across with a bunch of clothespin. Then I thought about how these objects are indirectly relates to us. They are in fact means of holding our clothes on the rope. But what if they hold our skin (as our boy's first covering) instead? This might be a hurtful idea!
At the same time I was wondering how metaphorical it is to change the function of objects or even nominate them. There are truly "metaphors we live by" (Lakoff & Johnson,1980) , and the theory really applies for our topic. As we are searching for a cuff or trying to produce one, we try to identify the world in another subjective parallel existence.
Therefor, while I am still searching to find cuffs, my inner sense tells me that this is a method of observation. To not only look for a specific term, but also think of "cuff" as a open context to strengthen your sense of perception and interpretation.
Lovely, Farid! So now we have cuff as metaphor and cuff as concept! Today, during class, we also had a metaphorical reference. So I've posted the difference between concept and metaphor above. But yes, in both cases, as you say, there is an opportunity to observe, and to think differently.
